Program Information Page 3
Since NMOHC is part of the SSI program, you can verify the financial requirements now.
- Income: For 2026, total "countable" monthly income must be less than $1,626.07.
- Assets: As of January 1, 2026, asset limits are reinstated. An individual must have less than $2,000 in countable resources ($3,000 for a couple).
- Note: One car and the primary home are usually excluded from this limit.
Visit a local Social Security office in person for a living arrangement interview to confirm NMOHC eligibility and the supplement amount.
- Tell them the person plans to move into a licensed RCFE.
- Ask for the new SSI payment calculation based on the 2026 NMOHC rate.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
This is the most direct pathway. If the member already receives SSI, the monthly payment is automatically bumped up to the NMOHC rate (approximately $1,626.07 in 2026) once they move into a licensed Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE). Of this amount, the member typically keeps a small Personal Needs Allowance (around $182), and the remainder is paid to the facility for room and board.
Social Security Administration (SSA) and SSDI
If the member's primary income is SSA (Retirement) or SSDI (Disability), they can still access the NMOHC pathway, provided monthly income is lower than the current NMOHC rate.
The "Gap" strategy
If the SSDI/SSA check is, for example, $1,200, it is higher than the standard SSI limit, but lower than the NMOHC rate ($1,626.07).
How it works
Once the member moves into assisted living, SSA considers the NMOHC rate as the new income ceiling. Because a $1,200 income is below that ceiling, the member may become eligible for a small SSI supplement. This technical SSI eligibility then triggers the full NMOHC rate for the facility.
